Quarantucky Derby, Sensory Bins

Derby-themed Sensory Bin

If you know me personally, you know that the Kentucky Derby has been a MAJOR part of my life from Day 1. Our city takes Derby pretty seriously, but our family… well, that’s just a whole ‘nother level of Derby lovin’ 😉. Now, I’ll admit, my little family has run away from the chaos the last couple of years on Derby weekend. But all Louisvillians know that Derby isn’t just one weekend. We celebrate for weeks leading up to the big event!

But here we are, in 2020, so of course things can’t be normal. The first Saturday in May became the first Saturday in September (because, surely things would be normal again by September, right? WRONG 😑). There are no events leading up to the big race. No spectators at the track. All of the things that we look forward to are cancelled or altered to be unrecognizable. We’re not going to let that ruin our fun over here though… ENTER: Quarantucky Derby (Take 2… we also celebrated in May 🤷‍♀️).

To kick off our week, we changed out the sensory bin and made it horse-themed. We’ve been LOVING sensory bins lately. They’re so great for all of the different ages we have here and when I find something that makes them ALL happy, we roll with it!

Sand for the “track”, fake grass for the infield and around the “track”, real hay for the “stable area” and horse figurines to play with it all!

This one was a real hit! They loved the different textures of the materials and they raced those horses around and around the track….. right before they completely mixed everything together and made a giant mess! The best part about these bins is that they use their own imaginations and come up with their own ideas that I never would have on my own. Even when it’s “messed up” in momma’s eyes, they still enjoy it and with this one, they think it’s tons of fun even all mixed together!

Can we just talk about that super sweet little “finish line” L made?! Gah… I just love kids’ handwriting ❤

More Quarantucky Derby coming this week. See you soon!
