Our Multi-Person Homeschool Desk

It’s been a little crazy, but we FINALLY have our main homeschool space put together! Just in time, too, since we actually started school today (more on that later). I’m so so excited about how everything turned out! From the desk space to our circle time board and everything in between! And the girls are loving it as well! To see a full classroom tour, check out this post.

When I looked at my husband and asked if we could turn the old crib into a desk for homeschool, I’m sure the first thought that went through his mind was “we have an old crib?” quickly followed by “oh lord, she’s roping me into ANOTHER project”. Actually, he really enjoys this stuff so he was excited to help… I think. This was so much fun to put together, and really not that difficult… plus, we had most of the supplies at home leftover from other projects so it cost very little to make! (Don’t mind the blank canvas hanging above the desk – that’s a future project for the girls!)

Materials and How-To

  • Used crib and corresponding hardware (obviously, you will not need the entire crib… just the back and the sides, the metal grid and the hardware to keep those parts together) .
  • Paint, if desired. I used a DIY chalk paint for the crib (painting over those tiny bite marks had my momma heart feeling all the feels) and some leftover trim/door paint for the desktop. The trim/door paint has been holding up well so far and wipes off fairly easily.
  • Something to seal the paint… this is going to get a lot of use from the littles so I put a few coats on. You can use any sort of wax, I used this because it’s what I had on hand. A wax brush is not necessary, but I find it very helpful.
  • 4 of these tee nuts or something similar (make sure it’s the right size to work with your crib hardware). You will need to add a hole in each of the 4 legs so the desktop will be high enough for chairs and legs to fit under. We used these pronged tee nuts that were threaded in the inside. We weren’t exactly sure how much weight this was going to need to be able to hold (we have a crazy climber on our hands), so we tried to make it as sturdy as possible. We had the sides and back assembled before drilling these holes and had to take it apart for this step, so maybe hold off on the assembly until all the holes are drilled.
  • Wood scraps or a piece of furniture grade wood. Thankfully, we had some wood in the garage from a previous project and it fit just about perfectly!
  • This sander. We’re big Ryobi fans over here. The batteries can be charged and interchanged between tools when needed. We love their products! We used this to sand the edges down to make sure there were no uneven edges where the girls could get scratches or splinters.

I think the rest is pretty self-explanatory and will also vary depending on the type of crib you use. Feel free to ask me any questions, I’d love to help! More to come on our classroom space soon… I can’t type anymore right now, I tried to find a “before” picture of the crib and now my eyes are filled with something watery.

Sweet baby L on her very first day home from the hospital all snuggled up in her crib that is now her desk ❤

  1. This is amazing! We had a very similar crib using the 3 sides & back plus lots of pillows as our classroom book nook! Your trip desk idea is genius!

  2. Super Mom at it again!! I LOVE your “homeroom” (See what I did there?? 🤣). You rock!!
